It’s Tax Time: ‘Tis the Season for Giving?

CGAs in Ontario Preparing Thousands of Free Tax Returns

TORONTO, ONTARIO (March 7, 2012) – Certified General Accountants of Ontario are providing big returns to Ontario communities by dispatching an army of CGAs helping low-income earners file taxes.

“CGAs see more than numbers. We also see a need to help low-income earners throughout Ontario,” said Doug Brooks, FCGA, CEO, CGA Ontario. “I’m very proud that such a large number of CGAs donate their time and expertise by participating in this program each year.”

CGA Ontario’s free tax return program is open to individuals with a gross income of less than $25,000 or families with a household income of less than $30,000. The initiative aims to ensure that low-income earners, including qualified seniors and people with disabilities, have local access to tax experts providing free tax returns.

CGAs file thousands of free tax returns through the program each year. Tax Preparation Services centres are currently scheduled at nearly 40 locations across Ontario until April 30, 2012. 

Appointments should be booked prior to meeting with a CGA to ensure eligibility. People who meet income requirements and qualification criteria are asked to bring:

1. 2011 personalized tax return package (received from the Canada Revenue Agency);

2. 2010 Notice of Assessment (received from the CRA after filing 2010 income tax return);

3. Copy of 2010 income tax return filed;

4. All information slips received for employment, pension and investment income (T4s, T5s, T3s, etc);

5. Receipts for charitable donations, medical expenses, RRSP contributions, child care receipts, tuition fees, etc;

6. Details of spouse’s and/or dependent’s income.
