CPA Ontario celebrates diversity by supporting Toronto’s Pride Parade
TORONTO, Ontario – (May 30, 2018) – On Sunday, June 24, a contingent of CPA Ontario members will march together during this year’s Toronto Pride Parade. We welcome all members and students who want to show their support of the LGBTQ+ community to join us in this celebration of diversity and inclusion.
CPA Ontario is committed to creating a safe and inclusive foundation in both the accounting profession and the workplace for all of our members, students and employees, including those who identify as LGBTQ+ or are an active ally of someone who does. That’s why we’re so honoured to walk with the LGBTQ+ community as a supporter of Toronto’s Pride Parade.
Pride Toronto has blossomed into North America’s largest Pride festival and the second-largest in the world. For CPAs, this marks a great opportunity to get involved in one of Canada’s premier arts and cultural events, while connecting with fellow members and celebrating every piece of the Canadian mosaic.
“Pride has always been a leader in the vanguard pushing for equality and inclusivity, both in Canada and around the globe,” says Craig Smith, Vice-President of Member Services at CPA Ontario. “Diversity is a key characteristic of the accounting profession, which is why we’re proud to stand alongside an organization like Pride Toronto that works to build a world where every person is valued and respected.”
The CPA profession’s support has been welcomed. “As a CPA, there’s something really special about feeling that I can bring my authentic self to this profession,” says Michelle Cherny, Chief of Staff to the National Audit Public Practice at Deloitte Canada and National Chair of Deloitte Pride. “To have the opportunity to march alongside your fellow CPAs and have your profession supporting you and your individual identity, that’s amazing.”
If you live outside Toronto and are unable to make it into the city for the festivities, there are a number of Pride events and other grassroots initiatives happening across the province, including in Ottawa, London, York Region, Peel Region, Durham Region, Barrie, Hamilton, North Bay, and more. We encourage all CPAs and students who want to get involved to show their support where they can in their own communities.
Those members and students interested in joining CPA Ontario for the June 24 Toronto’s Pride Parade should register soon, as we have limited spots available in our contingent. CPA Ontario looks forward to celebrating with you.
