Members, students, applicants and firms are governed by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario Act, 2017, the CPA Code of Professional Conduct, the Student Code of Conduct and the CPA Ontario By-law and Regulations.

The Member's Handbook is a comprehensive guide to the bylaws, which includes the CPA Code of Professional Conduct, and the rules, regulations and policies that govern the behaviour of all members, students, applicants and firms of CPA Ontario.

We undertook a comprehensive review of our By-law and Regulations to align them with the new Act and ensure they reflect regulatory best practices. We simplified the language and re-ordered sections for better flow, to make it easier for members to understand and comply with their obligations. We also incorporated amendments that support and facilitate our impending technology upgrades for members and students. At the September 21 Annual General Meeting, the new By-law was approved by the membership, and Council passed corresponding changes to the Regulations. The new governing documents replace the former versions, except for the CPA Code of Professional Conduct, which remains unchanged.

These new governing documents take effect on November 19, 2018. Changes to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Regulation (Regulation 7-2), however, will not take effect until January 1, 2019.

Below, you can read both the current bylaws and regulations, and the new By-law and Regulations.
